The Maze of Bones (39 Clues, No. 1)

Book title: The Maze of Bones (39 Clues, No. 1)
Author: Rick Riordan
Status: finished

Synopsis:
Minutes before she died, Grace Cahill changed her will, leaving her decendants an impossible decision: "You have a choice - one million dollars or a clue."

Grace is the last matriarch of the Cahills, the world's most powerful family. From Benjamin Franklin to Mozart, every important historical figures was related to the Cahills, yet the source of the family power is lost. 39 clues hidden around the world will reveal the family's secret, but no one has been able to assemble them. Now the clues race is on, Amy and Dan must decide what's important: hunting clues or uncovering what REALLY happened to their parents.

"The 39 Clues" is Scholastic's groundbreaking new series, spanning 10 adrenaline-charged books, 350 trading cards, and an online game where readers play a part in the story and compete for over $100,000 in prizes.

Review: (***SPOILER ALERT***)

I picked up this book mainly because it's written by Rick Riordan, author of "Percy Jackson & the Olympians". Turns out he only wrote the first book of this series, though he did map the narrative arc for all 10 volumes (I didn't know it by then, but other high-profile authors will be writing for the series, too)

Anyway, "The 39 Clues" is totally my kind of thing, jammed with adventures, mysteries, plot twists, suspense, peril, puzzles and snappy humor. So all in all, Riordan is doing a good job keeping readers glued to the pages.

When Grace Cahill died, the chosen ones were given the choice: inherit one million dollars or participate in a perilous treasure hunt. Amy and Dan weren't so lucky, being the helpless orphans they were, money wasn't an option, as their heartless guardian would soon rip them off and suck them dry. Amy and Dan could be annoying at times, with her social phobia induced stammering, and his hyperactivity and inconsiderate behavior; but as the siblings worked together to solve puzzles and survive dangers, they've developed into well-drawn individuals with their own strengths and personalities.

Can't wait to start reading Book 2!

iPhonegraphy

Cat's Cafe 5.0

Cat's Cafe 5.0

Handle with Care

Book title: Handle with Care
Author: Jodi Picoult
Status: finished

Synopsis:
Yet another engrossing family drama of Picoult's, spiced with her trademark blend of medicine, law and love. Charlotte and Sean O'Keefe's daughter, Willow, was born with brittle bone disease, a condition that requires Charlotte to act as full-time caregiver and has strained their emotional and financial limits. Willow's teenaged half-sister, Amelia, suffers as well, overshadowed by Willow's needs and lost in her own adolescent turmoil. When Charlotte decides to sue for wrongful birth in order to obtain a settlement to ensure Willow's future, the already strained family begins to implode. Not only is the defendant Charlotte's best friend, but the case requires Charlotte and Sean to claim that had they known of Willow's condition, they would have terminated the pregnancy, a statement that strikes at the core of their faith and family.

Review: (***WARNING: SPOILER ALERT***)

No hidden agenda, nothing unexpected, even Picoult's signature closing "twists", the death of Willow in this case, has become so formulaic that I could see that one coming half way through the book, and therefore can no longer call it a "twist". Having said that, I couldn't deny that it's a well-researched, domestic-and-legal-drama-told-through-multiple-viewpoints framework of Picoult's. Like all Picoult's books, this one is a page turner, though not as heart-wrenching and thought provoking as her other works. I still think Picoult's writing is captivating, that's what she does, to tackle tough subjects in a stimulating manner, yet this book is losing momentum, there's a lack of plot twists.

Maybe Picoult's focus is on underscoring the themes of hope, regret, identity and family, but there is no single one character whom I like in this book, which is a huge setback.

The Dragonriders of Pern

Book title: Dragonflight (Dragonriders of Pern, Book 1)
Author: Anne McCaffrey
Status: finished

Synopsis:
Pern is a planet inhabited by humans. The original colonists were reduced to a low level of technology by periodic onslaughts of deadly Thread raining down from the sky. The dragons, with their human riders, destroyed the Thread in the skies over Pern before it was able to burrow into the land and breed. However, an unusually long interval between attacks, centuries in duration, has caused the general population to gradually dismiss the threat and withdraw support from the Weyrs where dragons are bred and trained. Only one Weyr remains (the other five having mysteriously disappeared at the same time in the last quiet interval), maintaining a precarious hand-to-mouth existence.

To the nobles who live in Benden Weyr, Lessa is nothing but a ragged kitchen girl. For most of her life she has survived by serving those who betrayed her father and took over his lands. Now the time has come for Lessa to shed her disguise—and take back her stolen birthright. But everything changes when F'lar finds Lessa while Searching for candidates to Impress a new queen dragon Ramoth. Lessa becomes the Weyrwoman, and her hereditary telepathic abilities allow her to travel four hundred turns into the past to bring the five 'missing' Weyrs forward to her present in desperate times.

Review:
Anne McCaffrey has created a whole new world of fantasy in which dragons and riders bond for a purpose. This book is a page turner no doubt, though I dislike Lessa at first. Over time, Lessa's bravery and quickness outshines her recklessness, and like F'lar, readers would come to love her; annoyed by her often, yes, but couldn't help but love her.

Dragons are powerful creatures for sure, and the idea of dragons being able to go in "between", a means to teleport themselves between time and space, is refreshing and intriguing indeed, though I still fail to see how ancient, powerful and fearsome they are. Unlike Christopher Paolini's "Eragon", Anne McCaffrey's dragons don't have much character; they're more like riders' pets, obedient and loyal, but not the ancient, mysterious, powerful and magical species as featured in other fantasies.

The Lost Hero

Now reading:"The Heroes of Olympus, Book One: The Lost Hero" by Rick Riordan

Haven't read much fantasy lately, been reading John Grisham's crime novels and Sara Shepard's "Pretty Little Liars (Book 1)". Not that those books are not good, but it's never the kind of page turner like fantasy novels do to me. I started to read "Pretty Little Liars" becoz the TV series is kinda cool, loads of mysteries and puzzles, more like a crime thriller, but the book it based on is quite a disappointment, a bit boring, more like typical high school chic clique sort of thing ╮(╯ ^ ╰)╭

So I turned to "The Lost Hero" before finishing "Pretty Little Liars", and instantly felt the magic kicking in ♪(≧∀≦)

Percy Jackson is still my fave hero (demigod), but the whole Percy Jackson saga centers around him anyway, "The Lost Hero" is a bit different. For sure Jason is the protagonist, and there's much to learn about him, but I also like Piper McLean, daughter of Aphrodite the love god, who is anti-Barbie and smart, unlike her other half sisters; yet Leo Valdez is the one who stands out. He's definitely smart and good with his hands, he has a special ability too, a very rare one. He's the living proof that heroes could do great even they are children of minor gods, not the Big Three.

Rick Riordan finally created someone who have so much character like Leo and Piper, someone who bear no resemblance to the Harry Potter Trio. I mean, Annabeth and Grover are great, but a clever know-it-all female protagonist plus a clumsy sidekick? Hello, ring any bells?

I'm only 1/3 way through the book, but am already loving it, and I'm pretty certain some great adventures are lying ahead. Way to go Rick Riordan!

Our love may decay,
Our thoughts may stray,
Yet the memory of love is here to stay,
For sweet is its aftertaste.

Addiction, however,
is an entirely different matter.

Addiction may blind you like mystic haze,
Disguise in passionate kisses and affectionate gaze,
But it’s never love that you truly tasted,
Only your better judgment betrayed.

“Eternity”

There is no such thing as eternity;
Only everlasting memory.

This very moment you’re here by my side
Your fingers gently brush over mine.
To bottle up our kisses or sprinkle ‘em over the sky,
To keep them close or let them shine.

This beautiful magic of thine,
Blossoms like a fruitful vine.

We love, we age, we die.
All that’s left behind,
Are sweet memories that live forever on the spotless mind.

I had a nightmare about Japan post-tsunami......it's...devastated...and it's disheartening to see (even in dreams) all houses reduced to rubble, and people standing there with blank faces, too shocked to make a move.

Broken

Try as you may, you can never piece together something broken exactly the way as it was.

Once broken, it'll never be the same.

Then again, if you try hard enough, once in a while it might turn into something beautiful - different, but beautiful.

So beautiful that you can't help but wonder: Is this even real?

Even if something amazing can come of those broken pieces, most often than not, you wouldn't dare to embrace it, coz it's too good to be true, it looks so delicate and fragile that you dare not sneeze, lest it be blown into pieces, again.

No matter how much you appreciate it, you're constantly tiptoeing around it, expecting it to dissolve any minute like an illusion.

Once broken, it'll never be the same again.

Yet sometimes, we got to have a little faith.

I can't say that it never fails, it might as well break into a million pieces again, but it's a risk we must take to reap the reward.

All Powerful

Just watched the trailer of【127 Hours】on youtube, at the end, it says: There is no force on earth more powerful than the will to live.

I know it's meant to be inspiring, but, really? There is no force on earth more powerful than the will to live?

I don't think so.

Yes, the will to live IS powerful, it could drive one to do incredible things, it could do miracles, sure.

But there are also fools like me, who would not think twice about throwing our lives away for the ones we love.

The moment love knocks on your door, your life only comes in second. Nothing in all the universe could stop that feeling, and there's no price you won't pay, including your dear life.

So, sorry, I have to disagree on this one.

The movie is based on extraordinary real-life story of a mountaineer who amputated his own arm to free himself after being trapped from a boulder that pinned him for five days. So it must be inspiring, but I don't feel like watching it in theatre. Maybe it's just me, but the idea of watching somebody struggle and strive just to stay alive when a series of mishap befall him isn't that entertaining when I'm trapped in the cinema. So maybe I'll get the DVD when it's released.

Life is beautiful. I might get lost sometimes, might feel miserable or depressed, but I never take it for granted, coz I know damn well that not all of us could live to see yet another sunrise. I guess I'm lucky, coz I enjoy and appreciate many simple things in life, like that feeling of warmth as the sun washes over me, like the clear blue sky, the soothing sea, or simply sipping ice tea reading a novel on Saturday morning.

If only you could open your mind and enjoy what you see, life could be beautiful.

Beloved Berlin Wall

曾幾何時,靈感如泉湧,散文是最自然而然的抒發方式;
